…from an in-progress Flash game designed to teach Greek vowel contractions. It’s a bit of a break from my usual thing, but I’m having a good time learning some Actionscript. It’s also a lot of fun designing game mechanics around an existing thing I want to teach, rather than a system invented for the game.
It has a long way to go yet in terms of polish — I wanted to get the gameplay in place before I started going crazy with the art, for instance — and I’ll need to test the levels with students to make sure that the progression makes sense.

It’s good to see you’re working on something new. Do you have an estimate on when it will be finished?
If things go well it might be ready to show student testers next week (though it may then still need some work).
I’m glad to hear you have students!
Yup, still in academia at the moment despite the ghastly job market. Hoping the next hiring round will be easier.
If there’s no prerequisite knowledge of Greek, I’ll be glad to beta-test it for you.
Is the game about the spoken language or the written? Are you trying to get the students to speak the vowels correctly, or to understand when they need a contraction, and what kind to use?
Conrad.
It does require a little Greek knowledge, yeah. (And no, I’m not trying to teach pronunciation.) But thanks for the offer.
Ah, well. It’s all Greek to me…
Looks incredible, Emily! When can I license it?! :D
Will you release it to the public?? I could use a refresher on Greek vowel contractions. Actually… I don’t think I ever learned them properly.
Assuming I get it to work as I want, I’ll certainly make it public. But I don’t know when that’ll be.
Hi Emily,
I’m a Spanish If fan and also a Teacher of Latin & Ancient Greek in Secondary School. I use in my classes the natural method (Lingua Latina per se Illustrata in Latin & Oxford ΑΘΗΝΑΖΕ in ancient greek).
Anyway, I’ve seen your flash program and it looks great. Did you finish it? Is there any copy of it on-line? I would like very much to use it in my classes.
Thanks a lot.
I have the basic behavior working and the levels designed, but there’s a lot of additional polish that I would like to add to it. When it’s done, I’ll certainly make it available to the public, though.
