  1. This seems as good as place for a recommendation as any – though mostly I recommend because you’re the canniest writer on narrative theory in games and it feels like you would have Things To Say, rather than a recommendation based purely on merit.

    Have you played Sleep is Death at all? It’s by Jason Rohrer. I know you don’t rate Passage very highly, but this seems to my eyes to be a far more interesting project. It’s basically a tool-kit for improv. over a network or online, using 8-bit sprite graphics. One person controls the player character while the other person controls all the backgrounds, other sprites and music changes. Most games play out like primitive point-and-click games, but it can produce interesting little stories. It’s better played than read of course, but this is a nice short one I played through and enjoyed which gives you the general idea:

    I think it would be worth your time, though I am not entirely sure it would be to your tastes. I would certainly be fascinated to see what you make of it.
