CM Release 3

Once again, the Monkey site contains an updated release of CM that doesn’t handle all the bugs reported, but cherry-picks the ones that seem to be causing the most confusion to the greatest number of players, or that were extremely easy to fix.

Among other things, this includes improvements to the handling of the car; greater clarity in the “utilitarian-style” inventory listing about what is being carried in the backpack or worn at the moment; some debugging of issues with hard mode; and the addition of a number of objects that really ought to have been possible to generate.

Rot13’d change log for releases 2 and 3 after the break.

    1. Assuming it has been fueled and repaired, you should just be able to get inside and then pick a direction or place to go just as though you were walking. (Like: WEST, or GO TO ROUNDABOUT.) DRIVE TO place should also work.

      1. Hey, thanks! I actually figured out, but here’s what my problem was: You can get in the car and start it at its original location. Nothing suggests that it shouldn’t work (engine rumbles etc.) So I couldn’t figure out why the game wouldn’t let me just drive off.

      2. You can actually get in the car and “drive to” places without any indication that the car need fuel or repair, but in actuality the car stays put and you just end up in those places without the car. By the way, the game is amazing, I really appreciate how you keep putting out games that are not only fun and polished, they also consistently push the envelope on what games can do.

  1. That was quick! I’ve been playing around with release 2, and noticed a few more things that aren’t in the list of changes above:

    1. Using names in conversation when the game has suggested pronouns

  2. Ooh! I think I may have found a way to put the game into an unwinnable state (although it’s entirely possible that there’s an alternative solution that I’m missing):

  3. [I tried posting this before as a reply to my second comment, but it doesn’t seem to have gone through. I hope I’m not spamming you!]

  7. This game is great! An annoyance is that I have a wordplay game sitting around with all the puzzles designed (at least the first draft), waiting to get motivation to implement it and think of a better story, and after this and Shuffling Around I think it will be old hat.

I think you should probably mention more prominently in one of these posts that Zoom doesn’t support undo, at least not as of release 2 of CM and release 1.1.5 of Zoom. (Lea already mentioned this, I think.) And, it would probably be a lot of work, but maybe given the difficulties with UNDO on various interpreters it’d be nice to add a mode to confirm an action that would lead to an instadeath? For instance, this:

    >bhg
V pna frr na bssvpre znxvat uvf jnl orgjrra gur pnef naq fgbccvat ng gur snxr barf. Znlor jr’q orggre pbaprny bhe pne orsber jr yrnir vg — jr znl arrq gb znxr n dhvpx trgnjnl yngre.

    >chg try ba pne
(gur erfgbengvba try ba gur pne)
Jr qvc bhg crn-fvmrq dhnagvgl bs try naq eho vg tragyl bagb gur pne. Va n oyvax bs na rlr, gur pne prnfrf gb rkvfg.

Gur ceboyrz vf gung vg gnxrf hf nybat jvgu vg.

which I find unfair because it’s not obvious that the first action failed. With UNDO this would hardly rise to the level of minor annoyance, but without it it does. (Only minor — I’ve been saving so I’ve lost less play time than it’s taking me to type this comment.)

…or anyway, given that UNDO seems to be broken on a lot of interpreters, maybe somewhere in the update posts there should be a warning that messing up certain actions can kill you and you should save often even when you kind of don’t have to.

    1. Dhvgr yvxryl abg n oht. Vs lbh U-erzbirq gur NFU, lbh jbhyq gura unir GJB bs gur nf; gur bar gung pnzr sebz gur NFU naq gur bgure juvpu jnf tvira gb lbh ol Yran.

  8. I may have overlooked something in the terp instructions, but Gargoyle in Win 7 doesn’t allow me to save the game. When I do, it crashes, and the ensuing file is nonfunctional. Should I use another interpreter?

    1. That’s not something I’ve run into myself, and my evidence suggests others have managed to play on Gargoyle under Windows 7, though perhaps with some slightly different arrangement. But maybe try Windows Glulxe?

      1. TBH I think the reason may be that I’m saving to (and loading from) a network drive via Samba. I’ll try doing it locally first and see if the issue persists.

  9. The boys discussed CM on the most recent Video Games Hot Dog podcast (never safe for work), if you wanted to hear more about how good it is. (They really liked it.)

    [audio src="http://shows.kingdomofloathing.com/ahd/vghd87.mp3" /]

      1. Oh, sorry, it was remiss of me not to find you a time code! Didn’t realize it was so far in.

Zack, despite being constantly surrounded by women who are not drinking Red Bull and vodka, thinks all women drink Red Bull and vodka. Zack’s particular flavor of misogyny is a complex and subtle blend all his own, and I am fascinated by it.

I might go to PAX this year. If I do, I will buy you a gender-nonspecific beverage of your choice.
