Latest Playing: The Shadow in the Cathedral

“The Shadow in the Cathedral” is one of the best IF games released this year. Maybe not the best, but that would be a large claim to make considering that it’s competing with Blue Lacuna, Make It Good, The King of Shreds and Patches, the top couple comp games… it’s been a good year for IF.

But Shadow definitely belongs in the top tier.

IFDB review over here.

…from an in-progress Flash game designed to teach Greek vowel contractions. It’s a bit of a break from my usual thing, but I’m having a good time learning some Actionscript. It’s also a lot of fun designing game mechanics around an existing thing I want to teach, rather than a system invented for the game.

It has a long way to go yet in terms of polish — I wanted to get the gameplay in place before I started going crazy with the art, for instance — and I’ll need to test the levels with students to make sure that the progression makes sense.

PAX East

Just wanted to draw attention to zarf’s post about PAX East:

IF activity at PAX Boston!

…will happen. Details when we have them.

What? No, I really don’t know yet.

What? I’m talking about Penny Arcade Expo East, scheduled for March 26-28 next year, in downtown Boston. I’ll be there. Quite a few IF folks are interested in showing up. We all said “Yeah, we should get together at PAX and do some stuff!”

Zarf will be there; Jason Scott will be there; barring employment issues getting in the way, I will be there. (I registered, but it’s still conceivable Real Life will hit me in the nose instead.) Various other IF folks have said they might be there as well. There might well be an IF panel of some kind, and/or a showing of Jason Scott’s documentary.
