Recent Plays

Yesterday I played Mondi Confinanti’s “Little Falls”, a Glulx horror/thriller game. It’s short (less than an hour to play once), with few puzzles, largely relying on atmosphere; it provides full illustration and sound effects. I had mixed feelings — fuller review to follow — but I was impressed by the polish and effort, and probably would have found it more effective if I hadn’t gotten stuck on something stupid for quite a long time. If you enjoy horror or are interested in multimedia IF, it’s worth a look. There’s a page on the game and a download page.

A few weeks back, I played and enjoyed Jon Ingold’s “Dead Cities” from the Lovecraft Commonplace Book Project. I’ve yet to try anything else from that set, partly because “Dead Cities” was so cool I wanted to just let it stand on its own for a while. Wonderfully atmospheric, with some creepy, visionary elements.

Also worth a look: Eric Eve’s “Blighted Isle” (Zip file here). I beta-tested, so will not be reviewing it, and a few things may have changed since I tried it. But it is a sizable historical piece with multiple endings, a large host of characters, and the care and polish you would expect from Eve.

Recommendation

Over the weekend I played and quite enjoyed Adventurer’s Consumer Guide by Oyvind Thorsby. I will probably publish a longer review later, but for now I want to mention it because it doesn’t seem to be getting much notice on the newsgroups, which is a pity. It’s a game of the light-hearted, puzzle-centric type: the puzzles are good, the game is very soundly tested, and there are lots of nifty easter eggs.

Speaking of Trotting Krips…

They’ve kindly taken on a review I wasn’t quite sure where to place, of “Ron Weasley and the Quest for Hermione”. It’s a work of Adult IF, but I don’t mostly talk about the sex scenes; the review focuses on some craft and adaptation issues, since I’ve been interested lately in adaptation IF.

This may well mean that the target audience of the review consists of about three people. If one of those people is you, though, enjoy!

Some old review sites, back again

I’m delighted to hear that Reviews from Trotting Krips is posting some new reviews of IF — they were always an entertainingly irreverent site, but haven’t had much new material lately. And I see that the IF Ratings site, after being inactive for a while, is now loaded with a bunch of recent games ready for ratings. So hooray, and thanks to the admins of these sites.

Epic Origins of CamelGirl revisited, and Spring Thing conclusion

I had already played the opening of “Epic Origins of CamelGirl!”, but it turned out that the bug I encountered was due to interpreter problems, not the game, so I went back and gave it another chance with a different interpreter (under Windows XP).

I’ll continue with some more comments and my overall impressions of Spring Thing after the cut; but if you’ve played the games at all, remember to vote! The deadline is Wednesday, April 25. Spring Thing sometimes suffers from a relatively low number of votes and reviews, which is too bad, because the games tend to be interesting and more fully developed than the average IF Comp game; so if you have a chance to play and vote, please do so.
